Matilda S. 'Tillie' Baer died May 21, 2008 at Brethren Care Village where she had made her home since 1975. Tillie was born on January 12, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of George B. and Jessie M. (Ramp) Baer. Tillie was preceded in death by her older brother, Rolland 'Cubby' Baer in 1980 and his wife Jeannette King Baer in 1990. Tillie was also predeceased by her younger brother, George B. Baer, Jr. on April 23, 2008 and his wife Eleanore Louise Awig Baer in 1995. Tillie is survived by her cherished 'family members, Richard 'Dick' Stoll and Carol Schaefer, both of Ashland.
Tillie graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1931 and Dyke's Business School in 1932. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing, Cleveland, Ohio from 1934 to 1935, but physical problems prevented her from completing the course. She was personal secretary to W.H. Shiack, President of Globe Refining Co. for 2-1/2 years before entering St. Luke's and 2-1/2 years after leaving St. Luke's.
For 10 years Tillie was a medical secretary for Drs. Harold N. Cole and James R. Driver, dermatologist. During that time, penicillin was discovered to be a cure for syphilis which made a big difference in the practice of syphilology.
In 1950, Tillie joined her father and was a licensed insurance agent in the George G. Baer Insurance Agency.
In 1967, Tillie sold her home in Highland Heights, Ohio and the insurance agency and purchased a 75-acre farm in Ruggles from her life long friend Marie Fessler Timmons and her husband Robert Timmons. Tillie always felt her six years on the farm with her flock of sheep, a cow, a horse, a few chickens, a dog, and cats were the happiest in her lifetime.
For several years Tillie was treasurer of a women's investment club in Ashland.
Tillie's memberships included lifelong membership in Fairlawn Presbyterian Church, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, the Historical Society of Ashland, the Ashland Symphony Women's League, Friends of the Ashland University Library, and Friends of the Ashland Public Library. In the year 2000, Tillie was re-baptized by Pastor McGhee at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Wooster.
Eastman Funeral Home, New London is assisting with arrangements. A memorial service for Tillie Baer will be held at a later date.
