Obituary

Patricia Ann Sweeting, age 82, of Estero, Florida passed away February 22, 2025, due to complications from her 13-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

She is survived by her children Douglas and his wife Sheila Sweeting and Jennifer Sweeting and her husband Robert Northern; grandchildren Samantha, River, Jack, and Beck; and sister Barbra Sweeting, brother Gordon and his wife Pam Beck, and brother-in-law Dennis Magill.

She was proceeded in death by her husband of 56 years James Sweeting, her parents Wilbur and Elenore Beck, sister Susan Magill, and brother Ron Beck.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan. At age 13 she moved with her family to a dairy farm in North Fairfield, Ohio. She graduated from North Fairfield High School in 1960.

Pat earned a bachelor's degree in education from Rio Grande College. Due to a teacher shortage, her program included teaching full time beginning her junior year and completing coursework over the summers. She had her own classroom beginning in 1962.

On December 26, 1964, at North Fairfield United Methodist church she married her high school sweetheart, Jim Sweeting. After teaching in Mansfield, Ohio, Pat and Jim both taught on the island of Guam for two years. They had many adventures traveling around the world as they returned home.

They moved to Saginaw, Michigan for job opportunities and to raise a family. Pat was an active, loving, and busy mother.

For many years she volunteered at Saginaw Community Village, a senior assisted living facility, both teaching residents and supporting a myriad of social activities. She was on a community bowling league with friends and neighbors. Pat also enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and baking.

Pat started as Doug's Cub Scout leader and actively supported him through earning the Eagle Scout Award in Boy Scouts. She was also an amazing Girl Scout leader for 10 years, supporting Jennifer to earn the Gold Award. She guided the troop through the GS program — earning awards, outdoor education, cookie sales, and multiple exciting trips.

During the second act of her teaching career, she worked for various programs in the Saginaw and Bay City area, this time teaching adults returning to the job market.

Pat was an active member of the State Street United Methodist Church in Saginaw, Michigan. She volunteered at countless youth group spaghetti dinners, Mother's Day luncheons, craft fairs making delicious rosette cookies, and was a Sunday school teacher. She served as the Saginaw CROP Walk organizer for many years, helping to raise funds for hunger relief locally and globally. She and Jim enjoyed friendships with the members of their Growth Group over decades.

In their retirement Pat and Jim enjoyed travel and visited many places on their wish list including Alaska, New Zealand, Australia, and China.

When they moved to Florida, Pat became an active member of Estero Church. She and Jim not only worshipped there but volunteered in many arenas — they prepared lunches for migrant workers, worked the pumpkin patch, and regularly collected donations from Panera. Pat often contributed meals for events, including serving hurricane cleanup volunteers and was a dedicated English teacher in the church's ESL program for many years.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
