Raymond Stone Church, 91, died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at his residence. On October 9, 1918, Ray was born at home to the late Charles S. and Ruth E. (nee Morrison) Church. He graduated with the Wellington High School Class of 1937. Ray worked at the Wellington Foundry prior to joining the Army during WWII. During the war, Ray was part of the Infantry Division of Radio Technology in Europe. After his tour of duty, Ray returned home to work at Church Radio and TV, where he was a television repairman.
Ray's patriotism shone through all aspects of his life; he was a dedicated member and Chaplin of the VFW honor guard for military funerals, he volunteered by taking veterans to appointments at the VA Hospital in Cleveland, he organized trips for fellow veterans and was a Past Commander of the Wellington Veterans of Foreign Wars, of the Lorain County Council, the 9th District, and the Department of Ohio. For over 30 years, Ray raised the flag at every Wellington Dukes Football game. He also helped the Wellington schools by working on their sound systems and other electronics. Ray was also a member and Past Grand Master of the Wellington Masonic Lodge, the Wellington VFW and the Wellington American Legion.
Survivors include his two children, Janet M. (James B.) Dawson of Wellington and Charles S. (Brenda L.) Church of Huron; 6 grandchildren, Wayne (Angie) and Stacy (Richard) Church, Christina (Brian) Sabin, Douglas, Michelle, and James (Kristine) Dawson; 6 great grandchildren and his sister, Mamie Pfeiffer of Grand Blank, MI. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred in 1989 and two brothers, Glen Stone Church and Warren Stone Church.
Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with VFW and Masonic services starting at 7:45 p.m. on Monday, December 28 at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 S. Main St., Wellington. Funeral Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors.
