Richard Daniel Zullo, 69 died Sunday Morning June 30, 2013 at his home in Grafton Ohio. His wife and sons were with him as he made his final brave journey from this earth and from his extended loving family and devoted friends. Born in Cleveland on April 7, 1944 to the late Daniel Anthony and Josephine (nee Rizzollo), Rich grew up in Garfield Heights and graduated with the 1962 class of Garfield Heights High School. He attended Kent State University for three years.
Rich retired from Ohio Bell where he worked as an Engineer. In his retirement he worked for several telecommunications companies Including Orius and General Electric. He was also employed at Lockheed Martin in Cleveland for several years as a supervisor in the U.S. veterans benefit department. Rich often said he felt that his most important job in his life was that of Father. His participation and his leadership abilities in the activities of his sons were his best work. Rich was a Scout dad. He was Scoutmaster for Troop #300 in Avon Lake. He was an Eagle Scout counselor.Richard served as president of the church council at Hope Lutheran church in Sheffield Lake. He was a Sunday school teacher and a youth group leader. Along with his wife and sons, he served as a foster father for Lutheran children's Aid Society. He was excited about his son Doug's work at the Lake Erie
Nature Center in Bay Village and of his musical talents and love of art. He was always so proud that his sons chose careers in the field of Education. He so enjoyed his time with his grandson Paul. He attended all of his school programs and loved spending time with him at the zoo or going to museums. Pillow fights were a part of all vacations at Grandpa's as well as frequent trips to Carlisle reservation to enjoy nature and all holiday activities there. Rich was a volunteer for The SITES program at North Olmsted High School. He served on his condominium board. During this past year, Rich was a mentor in The ANGEL NETWORK through The Cleveland Clinic. His compassion was evident as he encouraged other cancer patients in their battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma.
Rich was an avid winemaker for over 14 years. He loved capturing vacation memories and family events by taking hundreds of treasured photos. He loved traveling with his family. His appreciation for nature and nation came from extensive coast to coast treks around the U.S.
Survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife of 48 years Carole (nee Settle) ;sons Jeffrey Allen(Rebecca) Zullo of Fairview Park and Dr. Douglas Richard Zullo of Oneonta N.Y.; grandson Paul David and brothers Michael Zullo of Lakewood CA. and Daniel Zullo(Phyllis) Zullo of Sagamore Hills. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Mary Jane Vatty and her husband Karl. He loved Amanda (Alan) Emily (Jim) Danielle (Bill) Bruce (Elizabeth) and Jane. He adored Gwen, Stuart, Will, Jesse, Caleb, Sophia and Nathan.
A celebration of Rich's life will take place Monday August 12, 2013. We will begin to gather at 5:00 P.M. at the Carlisle Metro Park Reservation visitors center (Black River Room) 12882 Diagonal Road LaGrange, Ohio 44050.We will remember Rich with a celebration service beginning at 6:00P.M.
