Robert Earl (Chappy) Kirkpatrick passed away peacefully September 18 at the Rehabilitation & Nursing Center at Firelands in New London. He was born March 29, 1918 on the family farm near New London to Alice Tindale Kirkpatrick and Stanley Earl Kirkpatrick.
Chappy graduated from New London High School in 1936 and spent his entire working life farming the land that had belonged to his father and grandfather. He married Marjorie Mae Luxon February 12, 1944 at her home in Fitchville Township.
The couple was known for their square dance orchestra that livened up many area Grange and Legion halls, with Marjorie on piano and Chappy calling the square dances.
Chappy was appointed a New London Township trustee after the death of his father, who had been a trustee for many years. He held that position for over 20 years until his own retirement from farming at the age of 65.
At that time he built a home next to the family farmhouse and enjoyed his retirement years chopping wood, working on woodworking projects, traveling, reading and spending time with family.
He was an active member of both the New London Grange and the New London United Methodist Church for over 75 years and was an original member of the New London Grange Bowling League and bowled weekly at New London Lanes until he became ill during the past winter.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie of New London; a daughter and son in law, Ellen and Allen Simmons of New London; a son and daughter in law, Roger and Jeanne Kirkpatrick of Jackson, Wyoming; a brother and sister in law, Harold and Lillian Kirkpatrick of New London; two sisters in law, Dorothy Luxon Ward of Fitchville Township and Jean Luxon of El Paso, Texas; two grandchildren, Amanda Kirkpatrick of Durham, North Carolina and Christopher Kirkpatrick of Jackson, Wyoming; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister in law, Kenneth and Lois Kirkpatrick; his brother and sister in law, John and Marian Kirkpatrick; his sister and brother in law, Mary Ruth Kirkpatrick Brumby and Harold Brumby; brother in law and sister in law Robert and Mimi Luxon, sister in law Norma Luxon Shull and brother in law Dale Luxon.
A celebration of Chappy's life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 23 at the New London United Methodist Church at 58 East Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New London United Methodist Church, the New London Public Library or Hospice of North Central Ohio.
