Obituary

Robert S. "Sputter" McLane, Jr., 75, of Greenwich, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at his home. He was born May 3, 1939 in Milan, son of the late Robert S. McLane, Sr. and Esther E. (Leidheiser) McLane. He graduated in 1957 from Milan High School. Robert lived his entire life in the Milan and Greenwich areas. He joined the US Army and served as a military police officer. One of his most challenging and distinguishing accomplishments was protecting Ole Miss College during the Civil Rights movement and riots of 1962. Robert worked for Price Construction, co-owned and operated Acme Paving of Greenwich with Dale Lameroux and was a salesman for Steyer Seed. He was a Greenwich Township Trustee. When Robert was younger he liked corvettes. He enjoyed spending time writing poetry and following sports, especially the Cleveland Browns and Cavs. His favorite game was Euchre and loved to get a round going anytime possible. He liked to go out to eat, going to casinos, was picky with his lawn and loved working on his orchard trees. Survived by his son, Randall McLane of Massillon; daughter, Elaine (Ransom) Eberlin of Pataskala; grandson, Matthew McLane of Massillon; step daughter, Cynthia Bulechek of Celina and his grand-dog, Pippa. He is also survived by his siblings, Barbara Noftz of Norwalk, Mary (Richard) Stutsman of Norwalk and Michael McLane of Milan; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Joseph McLane in 1961; sister, Joanne O'Donnell in 1991; sister-in-law, Diane McLane in 2006 and his companion of 25 years, Joanne Wise of Greenwich on June 22, 2014. Friends will be greeted Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Greenwich First Baptist Church, 96 Townsend St., where a service will be held Saturday at 11 am with Pastor Bob Hudberg officiating.
