Ruth Sparks Mouzon, 88, died peacefully early Monday morning, February 22, 2016, in Oberlin, Ohio, surrounded by her three children.
Ruth was born to the late Richard Sparks and Ivory Ethel (Wells) Sparks on September 15, 1927 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. She left school after the third grade to help her family, both in the fields with her father, and at home with her mother, caring for younger siblings. Ruth later completed her GED and went on to nursing school, after which she worked as a labor and delivery nurse in Mason, West Virginia. She spent five years in the Christian ministry in Kentucky, which were some of Ruth's most cherished. Her love for her faith and the story of Jesus Christ inspired her to share it with others her entire life.
Ruth married Fred Mouzon November 15, 1957 in Wellington, Ohio. They lived in Huntsville, Alabama for fifty-three years before moving to Oberlin in May 2010.
Ruth worked as a nurse until their first child, Stephen, was born. When the children were little, Ruth pursued a number of home-based businesses including teaching sewing classes and publishing a best-selling book on sewing. She opened Ruth's Nutrition in the mid-1970's, and successfully ran the health food store until 2004.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband, Fred in 2014, and her brother Lonnie Ray Sparks in 1931. She is survived by her son Stephen Alan Mouzon and wife Wanda of Miami Beach, Florida, and daughters, Susan Mouzon Henderson and husband Owen of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Hazel Mouzon Borys and husband Stephen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and three grandsons, Samuel Alan Mouzon, David Lawrence Mouzon, and Roman Mikhail Borys, all of whom Ruth loved and cherished deeply, to the point that she adopted the two oldest to grant them a better education. Ruth has five surviving brothers and seven sisters, thirty-four nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and countless dear friends in Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, and across the country.
