Samuel Rolland Markel, 82, a longtime Wellington resident, died Sunday, October 10, 2010 at the Cleveland Clinic. Born in Ashland on April 9, 1928 to the late Oscar and Bernice (nee Fry) Markel, Rolland was a 1946 Wellington High School graduate.
A skilled carpenter who loved all types of woodworking, Rolland built many of the homes in the Wellington area and also created the Gazebo in downtown Wellington. He enjoyed being with his family, fishing and flea markets. Rolland was a collector of antique woodworking planes and tools, John Deere toy tractors and Coca-Cola Memorabilia. In his younger years, Rolland was an avid bowler.
He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Patsy (nee Walsh); 3 children, Danny (Polly) Markel of Fredericktown, Scott (Michelle) Markel and Laurie (Steve) Dupee, all of Wellington; 6 grandkids, Rachel, Jason, Cassandra, Hillary, Hanna, Jessica and 4 great grandkids, Kaleigh, Trevor, Elliana and Aaron. Rolland is also survived by a sister, Betty Bonewit of Wellington. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa in 1975; sisters, Evelyn Biggs, Lona Mae Paugh, Anna Kimbler and a brother, George Markel.
A private family service will be held Thursday, October 14 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Lea Mahan officiating at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 S. Main St., Wellington. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Markel family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106.
