Shirley J. (Sayles) Knoll, age 88, of Norwalk passed away on May 27, 2022, at Norwalk Memorial Home. She was born August 6, 1933 in Milan to the late Melvin and Grace (Sly) Sayles. Shirley was a lifelong resident in the Norwalk/Milan area. She married Howard Knoll on March 25, 1951. Together they enjoyed gambling, taking day trips, traveling to Williamsburg, VA and surrounding areas and were longtime members of the former Shoestring Players in Norwalk. Shirley was a member of First United Methodist Church in Norwalk, also, Norwalk Eagles 711, Norwalk American Legion Post 41 and Norwalk VFW Post 2743. She enjoyed watching sports on tv, especially the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, OSU football, NASCAR and the Olympics especially curling. In her earlier years she enjoyed crocheting and sewing and was active in the PTA program at Pleasant Street School where her 3 daughters attended. After Howard's passing she enjoyed meeting her coffee group friends twice a week. She is survived by her daughters, Mickey Harris of Norwalk, Sue Downing of Fremont and Wendy (Chuck) Stein of Norwalk, Sister Patricia (Sam) Bomar of Collins, 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, with another due in October, 5 great great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, She was preceded in death by her husband Howard in 2006, sister Donna Ballard, Granddaughter Margaret (Krieg) Jensen in 2012, brother Davy and brother Kenny in infancy and son-in-law Dean Downing in 2005. Friends may call on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, from noon (12 p.m.) until the time of the service at 2 p.m. at Walker Eastman Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk with Rev. Dr. Brian Ogelsbee officiating. Burial will follow in Milan Cemetery.
