Shirley A. Schmuhl

Shirley A. Schmuhl, 93, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, on October 1, 2026, at The Meadows of Osborn Park, in Huron. She was born on January 28, 1933, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Lawrence M. and Blanche C. (Willitzer) Irving. Shirley graduated from Notre Dame High School in Toledo, where she attended Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. In 1954, Shirley received her Nursing Degree from Mercy School of Nursing. She was passionate about staying in touch with her school classmates.

Shirley enjoyed being first mate to her husband, boat Captain Al, taking countless adventures across Lake Erie and beyond to fish or explore. She was Jose Ramirez’s greatest fan and enjoyed watching Indians/Guardians and Mudhens baseball, gardening, sewing, crafts in general, stained glass, and quilting. Late in life her favorite activity was a game of rummy with Mary Jane who she regularly accused of cheating. She was generous with her time and had a giving spirit. She enjoyed adventurous travel to The Great Wall of China, Vatican City, Italy, Ireland, UK, and voyages through Alaska, and a grand American tour. Shirley was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Norwalk and was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Shirley will be remembered as having a unique sense of humor and looked forward to having a laugh with others.

She retired in 1987 from Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, where she was a surgical nurse for more than 25 years. She also previously worked for Mercy Hospital in Toledo.

Shirley is survived by her children, Matthew (Gayle) Schmuhl, Laura Sadler, Thomas (Laurie) Schmuhl, Mary Jane Schmuhl; her grandchildren, Timothy and Daniel Schmuhl, Kenneth (Meghan) Schmuhl, Catherine (Dani Cervellino) Schmuhl, and Margaret (Bradley) Schmuhl-Parcella; step grandchildren, Keli (Zach) Eckel, Heather (Shawn) Hemenway, and Jared (Cassondra) Matso; great grandchildren, Grant, Carson and Miles Eckel, Emmett and Warren Hemenway, Oliver, Quinn, and Juniper Parcella, Isabella Schmuhl, Westley Cervellino, and Scarlett and Lyra Matso.
