Obituary

Sonia R. (Mekoleske) Canfield, age 86, of Sullivan, died peacefully on October 26, 2024. Born May 29, 1938, in Rochester, Ohio, to the late George and Emma (Arnold) Mekoleske, she married her childhood sweetheart, Ray Canfield. Sonia and Ray would raise their family and live out their years together in Sullivan.

Sonia attended Sullivan Congregational Church and was a member of the Eagles #4208 of Spring Hill, Florida, VFW Post 1067 of Ashland, and the Eastern Star. She was passionate about music and loved playing the piano and singing at the family jam sessions. She was even known to do karaoke. However, the most important thing to Sonia was her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. After her children were grown she cherished time spent with her grandchildren and large family get-togethers. With her husband, Sonia also loved to travel in their motor home.

As a dedicated family woman, Sonia leaves behind many relatives who will cherish her memory and miss her dearly. They include two daughters, Sharlene Burlovich, and Linda Canfield, both of Hudson, FL; five grandchildren, Anna (Peter) Denton, Michael Brown, Bethany (John) Chime, Bessica (Anthony) Brilla, and Tarah (Rhonda) Faren; eleven great-grandchildren, John W. Chime, Thomas Chime, Quazar Brilla, Darren, Toby, Heavalyn, Josiah, Konnor, Roscoe, Nehemiah, and Shayana Denton; sister-in-law, Donna Mekoleske, and life-long friends whom she loved like family, Sid (Jean) Murray.

In addition to her parents, Sonia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ray; a daughter, Emma Brown; siblings, Charlie "Punk" Mekoleske, Bea Thompson, Anna Born, George Mekoleske, Zane Mekoleske, Louie "Dude" Mekoleske; and lifelong friends, Ruth and Clayton Matus, and Nancy Murray.

Graveside services for Sonia will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2024, at Sullivan Southview Cemetery. A gathering for family and friends will be held at Sullivan Congregational Church following graveside services. The Eastman Funeral Home in New London is honored to assist the family with their arrangements.
