Obituary

June Stranahan Strayer, of Norwalk, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 1, 2019 after a short stay at Norwalk Memorial Home.

June was born on June 9, 1927 to the late Ian Harry and Wilhelmina M. (Stocker) Stranahan in Euclid, Ohio. June grew up in Euclid with her three brothers, William, Robert Lee and Richard Stranahan. All preceded her.

She attended Capitol University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the Ohio State University. She received a Master of Science degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Toledo. June and her family served as Lutheran missionaries in Ethiopia from 1960-1963. Their work was broad and covered a multitude of diverse services including public vaccination clinics, teaching and building schools and churches. She additionally had the challenge of raising two small children in a foreign culture. After returning to the states June settled in Sandusky, Ohio and began her teaching career with Sandusky City Schools as a physical education teacher and later as a guidance counselor at Jackson and Adams Junior High Schools. June taught many young people how to swim through her teaching and educational outreach programs.

In her retirement June relocated to Venice, Florida and pursued many worldwide hiking and camping travel adventures. She remained active in her church, the tennis community (retiring her racket at age 80) and was an avid fan of tennis championships and the Ohio State Buckeyes. She returned to Ohio in 2013 residing at The Carriage House. She attended St. Peter Lutheran Church, Norwalk.

She is survived by her children, Nancy Strayer of Fredericktown, Dan (Lorna) Strayer of Put-in-Bay and her grandchildren, Bryant J. Strayer (Kelsey Parker, fiancé) and Weston R. Strayer (Kelsie), as well as many nieces, nephews and many special friends in Norwalk, Venice and Sandusky.

Visitation will be on Sunday, June 9 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 West Main St., Norwalk, Ohio. A funeral service will begin at 1:30 pm conducted by Pastor Ann Marshall of St. Peter Lutheran Church. At the request of the deceased, the body has been cremated.
