Obituary

Thomas A. Johnson, 89, a lifetime resident of New London, died Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Firelands in New London. Tom was born on September 23, 1921, the son of the late Arthur and Ellen (Watkins) Johnson. Tom graduated from New London High School where he was a standout performer in football and track. As a freshman he anchored his team's mile relay to a third place finish at the state competition. Following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps, Tom was a lover of music, singing baritone in his school choir. He also enjoyed acting and starred in his school's drama productions. During WWII he served in Guam and Okinawa as a part of the U.S. Army Signal Corp, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Broome-Wood Post 292. Thomas owned and operated Johnson Bros. Construction Company with his brother Wayne, later Tom ran Johnson Construction and Supply Company for many years. Tom built many homes during his career, including the home he lived in with his wife and family. Tom loved bowling and was active in several bowling leagues during his lifetime. Always a civic minded individual, he coached Little League Baseball for eleven years, served on the Village Council Zoning Board, delivered Meals on Wheels and also donated countless hours and money to the New London Recreation Park. He was a member of the Local Community Improvement Corporation and the New London Hospital Board. Tom was also a member of Rotary, serving a term as president. Tom was a longtime member of the New London United Methodist Church where he often served as an usher, a greeter, and where he enjoyed singing hymns as a part of the choir or in the congregation. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Margaret (Landis); children, Janet (John) Thonen of Oberlin, Robert (Pamela) Johnson of New London, William (Ruth) Johnson of New London and Timothy Johnson of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Jennica, Julie, Joshua, Jonna, Zachary, Danielle, Ashley, Jeremy and Charity. In addition he leaves eleven great grandchildren whom he adored. He is also survived by his twin sisters, Helen Campbell of New London and Mary Campbell of Ashland. Tom also leaves many loved staff and friends from the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Firelands. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne, his parents, Arthur and Ellen, twin infant sons and countless friends and family. Friends and family may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, November 15th and Tuesday, November 16th from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m. at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main Street, New London.
