Obituary

Velma Ruth Young, 84, a resident of Wellington, passed away on June 14, 2022. She was born July 13, 1937 in Charleston, West Virginia. She was a daughter of Evert and Myrtle King (nee James), deceased from New London.

Velma graduated from New London High School Class of 1955. She married Albert R. Young (now deceased) who was the father of their children. Velma worked at C.E. Ward in New London for a few years and at Snyder's Ben Franklin in Wellington. She then worked at Forest City Technologies for 37 years, retiring in 2002. Velma had been a long-time member of F.O.E. Auxiliary #2051 for many years. She was very active in volunteering there and had been an officer for several years. Velma also volunteered at the Picket Fence Gift Shoppe at Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin. In 2002, Velma met Carl A. Witbeck, who became her best friend and companion. They spent 15 years together until his death on January 19, 2017.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Becky (Tom) Peterson, of Newbury, Ohio, and her son, Ron (Cindy) Young, of Elyria, Ohio; brother, Elvin (Joyce) King of Cedarville, Ohio and sisters, Kathy (Tom) Babitt, of Berea, Ohio, Dora Miller, of Elyria, Ohio and Lois Riggs, of Atlanta, Georgia. Also survived by granddaughters, Annie Metro, Nikki Peterson and Kennedy Collins; grandsons, Jeremy, Josh and JT Young; four great grandchildren and her honorary grandchildren, Clint Thomas and Stephanie Smarr, as well as six honorary great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Velma was preceded in death by sister, Merle Blair and brothers, Charles Ernest, Erman, Edgar, Elton, Errol and Edwin King.

Family and friends will be received on Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 1-3:30 pm where services will begin at 3:30 at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 S. Main Street, Wellington, 44090. Dinner will be provided at the Wellington Eagles following a 5 pm service. In honor of her lifelong love of Cleveland sports, guests are invited to show their support by wearing Cleveland apparel.
