Virgil Askew Johnston, 79, of Wellington died Monday, November 24, 2008 at EMH in Elyria. Born in Cambridge on December 20, 1928, Virgil was the son of the late Virgil and Helen Johnston. Virgil lived in Cleveland and graduated from West Tech High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1945. Following his service to his country, Virgil worked at Alcoa in Cleveland as a non-destructive testing specialist until his retirement in 1989.
Virgil was an airplane buff and was interested in aviation all his life. When he was younger, Virgil worked at the Cleveland Air Races and in later years earned his Pilot's license and bought an airplane. He was a member of the EAA and the Navion Society. His other passion was Leonberger dogs. Together with his wife, Virgil raised, trained and showed the breed since 1992.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Judy; his sister, Annette Pachuta of Lansdale, PA and a brother, Robert Holloway of Cleveland. He was preceded in death by his four siblings, Charles Holloway, Arthur Johnston, Alice Harben and Mary James.
