William “Bill” J. Hopkins, 70, of New London, died on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the Hospice of Western Reserve Hospice House in Medina. Bill was born on September 12, 1955, in Norwalk, Ohio, the son of the late Theodore and Marilyn (Huber) Hopkins.
Bill was a graduate of New London High School, class of 1974. In his early years, Bill worked for the Village of New London, alongside his father in the sewer department. Bill pursued a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, graduating from Ashland University in 1995. Bill served as a case manager with Huron County Job and Family Services for many years.
A familiar sight around New London, he was much more than the wheelchair he used. He was a fixture in the community and a friend to many. Known for his quick wit and unmistakable sense of humor, he never missed an opportunity to exchange playful banter with friends. Whether giving someone a hard time, usually his gang at the Amoco gas station or sharing a laugh, his friendship meant a lot to many.
Bill was a proud member of the New London Eagles, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and coin collecting. He was an advocate for the physically disabled and was instrumental in bring awareness to the need for a wheelchair-accessible ramp at the New London Post Office. Bill had the mindset of a runner and did not let his wheelchair limit his abilities. He accomplished an impressive 32-mile journey on the New London-Greenwich Rail-Trail.
Bill is survived by his brothers, Gary (Robin) Hopkins and Mark Hopkins along with several nephews and many close friends. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother Patrick Hopkins.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Grove Street Cemetery on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Doug Lang officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the New London-Greenwich Rail Trail, P.O. Box 145, Greenwich, OH 44837.
