Obituary

William "Bill" Edward Spicer, 79, of Rochester, died Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Mercy Allen Hospital. Born on July 13, 1945, in Sandusky, he was the son of the late Herman and Edna (nee Sommers) Spicer and spent his early years being raised by his aunt and uncle, the late Mary and Roy Wray. Bill grew up in the Vermilion and Huron areas and was a graduate of Vermilion High School. He spent the early part of his adult life in Elyria before moving to Rochester in 2003.

Bill was a man of many talents - as a youth he began helping his father on his milk delivery route and later started his own business repairing lights on trailers and Corvettes. His primary job was with Ford Motor Company where he started on the line and worked his way up to an inspector. After retiring from Ford, Bill continued to stay busy, working for Elyria Maintenance, and as the service manager at Clar-Mar Lake Campground.  He also served as Mayor of Rochester for one term.

In addition to his work life, Bill kept busy volunteering. He was a board member for the Southern Lorain County Ambulance District, helped with the Office of Aging, and was a devoted member of the Rochester United Methodist Church. Bill was a member of both the Rod and Gun Club and the Wellington Eagles.

Bill found great enjoyment tinkering with old trucks and tractors. He loved camping and spending time with his family and friends. Bill was good with tools and guns. Often found at a flea market, Bill liked to barter and was always on the look out for the clocks, watches, and case knives he collected. He will fondly be remembered as a real jokester and trickster by all who loved him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ricki; children, Candy (Jim) Strauser, of Sheffield Lake, Shirley (Fritz) McAtee, of Lorain, Serina Conlan, of South Amherst, Catherine (Mike) Tokar, of Florida, Maria Miller, of Oberlin, Raymond Scott (Linda) Tyree, of LaPorte, James (Holly) Mitchell, of Elyria and Joshua Mitchell, of Rochester; 26 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren with two more on the way; his brother, Tom Spicer; and his beloved dog, Charlie. Bill was preceded in death by his son, Alan Tyree and brother, Robert Spicer.

Friends and family will be received on Wednesday, January 8th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Funeral Service at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 S. Main Street, Wellington. Expressions of sympathy can be shared at www.norton-eastmanfuneralhome.com.
