Zinia (Hall) Collins, age 80, of New London, Ohio, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday morning, April 1, 2009 at MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield.
She was born on February 11, 1929 in Drift, Kentucky, the daughter of the late William 'Tack' and Lizzie (Case) Hall.
On a brisk February weekend, Zinia met the love of her life, William Lloyd Collins, a man in uniform on a short leave from the Army. Three weeks later, on March 16, 1946 they were married in Pikeville, Kentucky and shared over 63 wonderful years together.
She performed custodial care for New London Savings and Loan for 13 years and spent six years as a seamstress at C.E. Ward Company in New London. Her most important role though, was that of a loving wife, mother, and homemaker.
A woman of deep faith, Zinia attended the Hartland Center Community Church and was a member of the Little Dove Old Regular Baptist Church in Trace Branch, Kentucky.
Everyone knew that the kitchen was Zinia's domain. In it, she created many masterful dishes. Every meal was made from scratch and a whole lot of love. Her recipes were impossible to duplicate because she could never give you exact measurements; she would just grab what felt right and say 'it takes about this much.' No one was allowed to leave her home on an empty stomach; it was demanded you eat, especially the fresh pie or other dessert just out of the oven.
Zinia's hands were those of a doer and creator. Many intricate quilts were designed by those hands and given as gifts. She and Bill planted and cared for a plentiful vegetable garden every year. When it was time to harvest their goods, she spent many hours and days canning their produce. She also loved to tend to her beautiful flower gardens.
A special place existed in Zinia's heart for each member of her family and friends. Many decades of holidays, celebrations, and family get-togethers were held in her home. To her, family was always the most important thing in life. We are all very blessed to have known such a loving and caring woman as our wife, our mom, our sister, our grandma, our friend.
Zinia will be dearly missed by her husband, Bill; her five children: son, William (Uari) Collins, Jr. of Wichita Falls, Texas and their children, Suriyan (Ana) Collins of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Jamie (Mike) Ellis of Wichita Falls, Texas, Amy (Mike) Varnadoe of Benbrook, Texas, son, Bob (Jeanene) Collins of Wellington, Ohio, and their children, Brian (Missy) Collins of Wellington, Ohio, Bobbi Jean (Brian) Forrest of Medina, Ohio, daughter, Delores (John) Kline of New London, Ohio, and their children, Rachael and Laura Kline of New London, Ohio, son, Michael (Debbie) Collins of Lexington, Ohio, and their children, Ryan (Angela) Collins of Mount Gilead, Ohio, Shannon Collins of Columbus, Ohio, Erica (Luke) Kiger of Lexington, Ohio, son, Garry 'Beak' Collins of New London, Ohio and his children, Brett Collins of Ashland, Ohio, Stacey (Bill) Workman of New London, Ohio, Branden Collins of Crestline, Ohio; six brothers: Audis 'R.B.' (Dottie) Hall, Kadous (Nancy) Hall, Walker Hall, all of Kentucky; a sister, Alice (Samuel) Boyd of Kentucky, 9 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Curt and Vardie Hall, and a sister, Margie Hunter.
Zinia's family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2009 at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services celebrating her life at 11 a.m. with Pastor Todd Froehlich officiating. Burial will follow in Ashland County Memorial Park.
