Allen Wayne Kimmich, 93, of Wellington, died Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital after a brief illness. Born on December 9, 1929 in Cleveland, he was the son of the late Allen and Molly (nee Plitt) Kimmich. Allen attended Lakewood High School and graduated from Rocky River High School. He went on to attend Ohio University and Miami University of Ohio.
Allen married Donna Smith in November of 1950 but the wedding they had planned was cancelled when the Great Appalachian Storm of 1950 brought record breaking blizzard conditions to the area. Determined to be with his bride, Allen walked from Rocky River to Lakewood through the blizzard. Allen served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After his military service was completed in 1954, the couple moved to Wellington to join Donna’s father in running Wellington Auto Parts. Allen owned and operated Wellington Auto Parts until the business was sold in 1996. He continued his work in the Wellington Auto Parts machine shop for many years, concluding those activities only in the last few years.
Allen was very civic minded and served on numerous boards and committees in Wellington. He was a long-time member of the Chamber of Commerce and worked with the village to start the first 4th of July Fireworks. Al served on the Wellington School Board for several years and was on Village Council, serving a term as President. He continued to serve and was, until his death on the Village Zoning Board. Al was also an active member of the Wellington First Congregational United Church of Christ, and a long time member of the Wellington Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed working on and restoring vintage cars, and talking shop with his comrade Cranksters who comprise the local vintage car club. Allen was an avid motorcycle rider and took many trips with his wife Donna and their dear friends Walter and Helen Young. More than almost anything, Al enjoyed the village life of Wellington, Ohio, and the many enduring friendships that emerged in the course of his business, civic, and family activities.
Survivors include his loving wife of 73 years, Donna Kimmich; children, Holly Watson, of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Ben (Debbie) Kimmich, of Wellington; grandchildren, Brian Watson, Mark Watson, Matthew Kimmich, David Kimmich, and Rachel Kimmich-Adkins; and great grandchildren, Aubrey and Asher.
