Carolyn A. Mench, 79, of Norwalk, died March 6, 2020 surrounded by her family under the care of Stein Hospice. On June 25, 1940, Carolyn was born in Norwalk to the late Carl and Martha (nee Pheiffer) Schaffer. She grew up in Monroeville, attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School and was a 1958 graduate of Monroeville High School. Carolyn lived in New London for over thirty years before relocating to Norwalk in 2005.
Carolyn worked as a bank teller at Farmers and Citizens Bank, now known as Croghan Colonial for ten years. In 1977, she began working at the New London Public Library, where she worked until 1994. During her tenure at the Library she eventually became Director and implemented many changes, including the online card catalog system. Carolyn also worked at Sutton Bank in New London.
She possessed the heart of a volunteer, working as a Huron County Board of Elections poll worker, giving her time to FTMC from 2007-2019, serving on the social committee at Hunter’s Glen and participating in the Altar and Rosary Society, Parish Council and being an Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in New London. Carolyn was also member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the American Library Association.
Her hobbies included bowling, word find puzzles, gardening, floral arranging and crafts. Carolyn loved baking, cooking and enjoyed traveling, especially to Tennessee. She treasured the time spent with her family and it brought her great joy.
Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, John; children, Jonathan (Lynn) Mench, of Springfield, TN and Laura (Edward) D’Amato, of Berea; 7 grandchildren, Ryan Mench, Jonathan “Tyler” (Haleigh) Mench, Lauren Mench, Kyle (Destiny) Mench, Johnathen Atkins, Matisen Atkins and Jonathan D’Amato and 3 great granddaughters, Harper, Walker and Everly Mench. She is also survived by siblings, Vincent (Mary Ann) Schaffer and Mildred Miller, all of Monroeville; sister-in-laws, Dorothy Schaffer, of Bellevue and Joanne Schaffer, of Monroeville and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carolyn was preceded in death by siblings, Mary Hettel, Dolores Miller, Paul Schaffer, Elnora Bores, Carl Schaffer, Jr., Rosemary Schaffer and Dorothy Rose Schaffer; and brother-in-laws, Arden Miller, Don Hettel, Willard Miller and Leander Bores.
The service originally planned for May 9, 2020 has been postponed. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
