Dr. Sylbert R. “Sib” Strimple, 96, of Greenwich, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2020 surrounded by family at home. He was born on May 20, 1924 in Greenwich to the late Leonard and Frances (Wise) Strimple and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1942.
Sylbert served his country by enlisting with the United States Army in 1942. He spent 16 months in France and Germany during WWII as part of the European Theatre Operations. A notable fond memory, in 1944, Sib sailed on the “Queen Mary” along with Winston Churchill. While in the Army, he was part of the 7th Armour Division’s 40th Tank Battalion as a medical aid man.
Sylbert began his secondary education at Ohio Wesleyan through an Army program and continued his studies after his military enlistment at The Ohio State University, graduating in 1951 with a master’s degree in Dentistry. That same year Sylbert opened his dental practice in Wadsworth, OH where he practiced for 45 years. In 1970 he was inducted into the International College of Dentistry, where he held a membership until his passing. He was also a member of the American Dental Society.
Sib was passionate about helping others and community service. He served 4 years as a Wadsworth City Councilman and was instrumental in designing the Wadsworth Shade Tree Commission. For 23 years he served as a Park Commissioner on the Medina County Park Board.
Sylbert’s legacy will be one filled with memories of his gentle spirit, positive outlook, love and respect of nature, faith, and aptitude for teaching and serving others. He was a gentleman in all ways and will be missed by those who survive him including his loving wife, Cheryl (Evans) Strimple; daughters, Marty (Rob) and Tiffany (Tim); sons, Derek (Jenn), Darrin (Jodee) and Danny (Christine); sisters, Pat (Lorin) and Evelyn; 12 grandchildren who lovingly knew him as “Pappy”; 14 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his fur babies, “Murphy” and “Ollie”.
In addition to his parents, Sib is preceded in death by his daughter, Jane and brother, Leonard.
Sylbert’s wishes were to be cremated. A burial is being planned for a later date in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Eastman Funeral Home, Greenwich were entrusted with assisting the family with arrangements.
