John Mench Obituary

John E. Mench, 85, of Norwalk, died August 13, 2022, surrounded by his family under the care of Stein Hospice. On July 30, 1937, John was born in Norwalk to the late Waldo E. and Alwilda M. (nee Shipman) Mench. He grew up in Monroeville and graduated from Monroeville High School, Class of 1955. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and received a master’s degree in history and social studies from the University of Michigan. Prior to starting the New London High School Resource Center in 1969, John taught English at New London and EHOVE and also worked as the Librarian at Monroeville High School and EHOVE. John retired from New London High School in 1996. 

John was a member of education associations at the local, state, and national level. He also was the advisor for several activities at New London High School. 

He enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, classic movies, and traveling. His favorite destinations included the Western US, Williamsburg, VA, and Tennessee. His most cherished time was spent with his family. 

John was married December 27, 1967, to Carolyn A. (Schaffer) Mench who preceded him in death in 2020. He is survived by children, Jonathan (Lynn) Mench, of Springfield, TN and Laura (Edward) D’Amato, of Berea, OH; 7 grandchildren, Ryan Mench, Jonathan “Tyler” (Haleigh) Mench, Lauren Mench (Jeff Obelcz), Kyle (Destiny) Mench, Johnathen Atkins, Matisen Atkins and Jonathan D’Amato and 4 great grandchildren, Harper, Walker, Everly and Raylan Mench; sister-in-law, Noreen Mench; and nephews Mark and Matthew Mench. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, James L. Mench. 

A memorial gathering for John and Carolyn will be held at the Hunter’s Glen Condo Clubhouse on September 24th from 2-4pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice. The staff of the Walker Eastman Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main Street, Norwalk assisted the family with arrangements.   Online condolences may be made at www.eastmanfuneralhome.com.
