Lambert Allen Fitzgerald (83) passed away peacefully at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 after a long illness. Lambert was born October 2, 1939 in Warren, PA to El Vera (Johnson) Fitzgerald Brinkley and to Merle Fitzgerald. He graduated from Warren High School in 1957 and graduated from Edinboro State College (now Northwestern of PA) in 1960 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Lambert taught English in the Lorain City Schools at Hawthorne (1960-1962) and at Admiral King High School (1962-1973). He attended the MB Johnson School of Nursing (1973-1976), received his Nursing Degree from Lorain County Community College in 1977, and became a registered nurse.Lambert was a loving soul that always gave his time and talent, first as an educator and later as a nurse and finally as a caretaker to many ill and elderly individuals in Lorain. When he first came to Lorain in 1968, he rented a room from the Bloedorns on Reid Avenue and later became a caretaker and close friend to Isabel Bloedorn. Next door to the Bloedorns was Gertrude Steiner (Gertie), whom Lambert later married and spent a wonderful life with until her death in 1992. Gertie was the sister to Lorain's beloved poet and laureate, Helen Steiner Rice. Lambert and Gertie carried on Helen's legacy after her death by helping to promote her work and displaying many of her original writings and personal belongings. Gertie is buried with her parents and her sister, Helen, in Lorain's Elmwood Cemetery.Lambert had a love for traveling the world and visiting friends. He visited London, New York, Papua New Guinea and even took Gertie to Australia in her late 80s to watch his good friend conduct the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
