O. Ruth Popa Southworth (Nee Shorthouse), 103, of Bradenton, FL passed away at home on May 31, 2022 after a brief illness. She was born September 28, 1918, in Blooming Grove, OH to Bertha Mae (Bare) and John Kennon Shorthouse.
After graduating from Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing in 1940 and working there for several years, she joined her husband, Adam at Tappan Stove Co in Mansfield, OH where she worked as a nurse until she retired. She was recognized as one of the first Industrial Nurses registered in the country.
She and Adam retired to Bradenton, FL where he passed away in 1989. Ruth reconnected with a widowed friend of theirs, Herb Southworth. They were married in 1993 and remained in Bradenton near family members Pearl (Floyd) Marietta and Mae.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Adam and Herb; siblings, Lina (Lee A.) Pittenger, Artie (Clem) McDougal, Ray (Marie) Shorthouse, Roy (Ruth) Shorthouse and Dora (Wendel) Troxel; nieces, Pearl (Floyd) Marietta, B. Mae (Carl) Newcomer, Harold (Darlene)McDougal and Kenny (Linda) Shorthouse. She is survived by her nephew, Dick Troxel; nieces, Connie (Robert) Chase and Bonita (Greg) Barnes, Donna Jean (Arthur) White, Chris Shorthouse and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. She will return to Ohio to be interred beside Adam in Edwards Grove Cemetery, Greenwich, OH.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 14 at 1 p.m. at Edwards Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Eastman Funeral Home, Greenwich. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and expressions of sympathy can be given at www.eastmanfuneralhome.com.
