Richard Sutherland Obituary

RICHARD M. SUTHERLAND

Dick Sutherland passed away peacefully at the Laurels of New London on July 22, 2022.

He was born to Nadene (Grimes) and Don Sutherland along with his twin brother, Bob, on November 11, 1946. He grew up in Wellington Ohio where he graduated from high school in 1964. He attended The Ohio State University prior to enlisting in the US Army in 1965 where he served as a carpenter with the 79th Engr. Battalion. During his service he was deployed to Germany and Africa before being honorably discharged in 1968 at the rank of Sergeant.

He began his law enforcement career in Wellington Ohio in 1971 where he worked for 3 yr before being hired at the Huron Co Sheriff’s office in 1974. His many assignments included road patrol, detective bureau and was a road supervisor before being elected to Sheriff in 1988.

Sheriff Sutherland served the citizens of Huron County as their sheriff from 1989 until his retirement in 2009. During his tenure as Sheriff, one of his many joys was presiding over the Sr King and Queen contest at the Huron County Fair. Dick never met a stranger, and always loved a good joke or prank unless it had something to do with snakes.

After his retirement he was involved in many community activities. He enjoyed his time with the Amish Community and as with anywhere, he always made many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Kitty (Calhoun) Sutherland, 5 sons, 4 brothers, 11 grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his twin brother Bob, his Aunt Donna Grimes and his step mother, Edie Sutherland.

To honor Dick’s request no visitation nor service will be held. Anyone wishing to contribute to Dick’s memory may do so at either SouthernCare Hospice of Milan, 9501 US Hwy 250 Milan, OH 44846 or Huron County Humane Society, 246 Woodlawn Ave, Norwalk, OH 44857.
