Ulrich “Uli” Mangold, 91, of Norwalk, passed away peacefully Friday morning, April 15, 2022, at Norwalk Memorial Home.
Uli was born on January 5, 1931, in Backnang, Germany to the late Hugo and Gertrud (Schuele) Mangold.
Uli was a baker’s apprentice in Germany before leaving for the United States with his wife on November 9, 1954. He was employed at Lyman Boat in Sandusky from 1954 – 1956. Uli began working for Norwalk Furniture in 1956 and retired in 1995 after 39 years of dedicated service. He was an active member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council, as an usher, and various planning committees. In his spare time, Uli enjoyed camping, wine making, gardening, yard work, woodworking, and taking retirement trips with his wife. Uli was a skilled baker and was well-known for his pretzel rolls, Bavarian pretzels, New Year’s Pretzels, Christmas cookies, and many other baked goods. His greatest joy of all was spending time and celebrating German traditions with his family.
Uli is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Margarete (Schad) Mangold, who he married on October 9, 1954; 4 children, Ernest (Pam) Mangold of Norwalk, Barb (John, Jr.) Knapp of Millersburg, Carol (Kenn) Petersen of Huron, Rose (Richard) Hauler of Norwalk; 6 grandchildren, Sheila, AJ, Jeremy, Heidi, Amy, and Rick; 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews in Germany.
In addition to his parents, Uli was preceded in death by his 5 siblings, Gertrud, Hugo, Elsbeth, Ruth, and Irmgard in childhood.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, from 11 am until the time of funeral service at 12 pm at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 243 Benedict Avenue, Norwalk, OH 44857. Pastor Ann Marshall will be presiding. A burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
