Velda M. Cook, 96, of New London, died November 22, 2020. She was born March 3, 1924 in Cleveland to Elvin and Agnes Smith. At the age of one year she moved to Milan, Ohio to live with her grandparents, George and Myrtle Smith, on their small vegetable farm. She graduated from Milan High School in 1942.
A high school girlfriend invited her to hear Bill Leslie preach at the Norwalk Baptist Church and Mr. Leslie then invited her to accompany him to Barrett’s Chapel located north of New London on Cook Road. There she met and married local farmer Laurence D. Cook in 1948. Velda taught Sunday School and was the church pianist for many years. After marriage they lived on their farm near New London and attended Barrett’s Chapel until physically unable late in life.
Laurence preceded Velda in death after 58 years of marriage in 2006. Her son Mark W. Cook also preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons Laurence K. Cook, Stanley D. Cook, David A. Cook, her daughter-in law Lysa A. Cook, grandson Christopher D. Cook (Florida), and brother Robert Smith (Parma).
Velda was a loving wife and mother. She was always ready to listen and show empathy for others. She placed others before herself. Velda aspired to be a woman of noble character as set forth in Proverbs 31:10-31.
