Walter A. Dittman

Walter A. Dittman, 90, of Greenwich died at his home on Monday, September 28, 2020.  He was born on June 23, 1930, the son of Rellie and Blanche (Dowing) Dittman.  Walter was born and raised in St. Petersburg, PA.  On June 13, 1953 Walter married Janet L. (Rivar) Dittman and they shared 67 years of marriage.  In 1955, they moved to Greenwich, Ohio.   

Walter proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952 and was a part of the Korean War.  He was active in the American Legion and served in several positions; Commander, Vice Commander, and Sargent at Arms.  He is a lifetime member of the Norwalk American Legion and the Norwalk VFW.  Walter was a member of the Army National Guard, Company E 145 Regiment in Ashland for 3 years.

He worked as a machinist at Akron Standard and Goreman Rupp.  Walter worked on the Mackinac Bridge, a double decker bridge in Fort P.H. Pittsburg, PA and a bridge in Venezuela.  He served from 1965 to 1971 as an officer with the Greenwich Police Department.  In addition to hunting and fishing, Walter enjoyed coloring. 

Walter is survived by his wife, Janet L. (Rivar) Dittman, children; Linda (Darrell) Coffman and Kirk A. (Patricia) Dittman, grandchildren; Kristal, Kimberly, Derek and Taylor, along with 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Maxine Simpson, Shirley Smith and Donna Sheely.  In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.    

A graveside visitation will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2020 from 12:30 – 1:30 pm at the Edwards Grove Cemetery on Edwards Road, Greenwich, Ohio.  A graveside service will begin at 1:30 pm with Military Honors and David Horst officiating.  Expressions of sympathy can be shared at www.eastmanfuneralhome.com.
