William L. Spencer

William L. Spencer, 82, of Wakeman, died on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Life Care Hospice in Wooster.  He was born on February 23, 1941 in Westlake, OH, the son of Edgar and Arlene (Minut) Spencer.  He was a 1959 graduate of New London High School. He was a member of the Marine Corps Reserve.

William worked for RE Warner and Associates of Westlake.  For 20 years he was employed by the State of Ohio as a surveyor.  He previously served as the president of the New London Athletic Booster Club where he was monumental in getting the all-weather track completed.  He served as a track officiant and was involved in sprint car racing.  He owned and operated Spencer Christmas Tree Farm in Wakeman and was a beekeeper.  He loved gardening, hunting and enjoyed visiting different zoos. 

William is survived by his wife, Marcia (Keirns) Spencer of Wakeman; children, Joanne (Daniel) Willinger and Eric (Cherry) Spencer both of Wakeman; step-children, Virginia (Scott) Greer of Hayesville, April (Michael) O’Neill of Clarksville, TN and Kristin Keirns of Kalamazoo, MI; grandchildren, Robert (BJ) Herold of Eugene, OR, Sarah Willinger of Wooster, OH and Ethan Spencer of Wakeman and 4 step-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne (Nancy) Spencer of Mohicanville, OH and brother-in-law, Ken Hissong of Ashland.  William was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra (Hanlin) Spencer, his sister Lynette Hissong and brother, Gilbert Spencer. 

Friends and family will be received on Monday, February 27, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday, February 28 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main Street, New London, where his funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow at the Clarksfield Methodist Cemetery.   Memorial contributions may be directed to the Western Reserve Athletic Boosters – stadium and track project, 3765 US Route 20 E, Collins, OH 44826.  Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family by visiting www.eastmanfuneralhome.com.
