Wilma J. Hammersmith, 99, of Norwalk, passed June 14, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born April 19, 1923, in Bismarck, Ohio to the late Josephine (Ringlein) and William J. Didion. Mrs. Hammersmith was married February 10, 1942, to Harold J. Hammersmith who preceded her in death in 2013. She was a faithful member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Peru, Ohio and enjoyed singing in the choir and being a part of the quilting group. Mrs. Hammersmith also sang in the Town and Country Singers, loved gardening, cooking, crafting, and playing cards. She enjoyed listening to music and was a big fan of the Cleveland Indians, but spending time with her family was what she cherished most.
Mrs. Hammersmith is survived by her 6 children, Kathleen R. (Gerald) Stoll of Sandusky, Eugene H. (Nancy) Hammersmith of Norwalk, Glenn A. (Vicki) Hammersmith of Norwalk, Dale J. (Jean) Hammersmith of New London, Debra A. (Ted) Ickes of Norwalk and Bruce A. (Janine) Hammersmith of Bay View, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren and sister, Connie Hipp of Norwalk. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 8 siblings, Gerald, Gilbert, Celestine, Isadore, Eugene and Herbert Didion, Sally Eberly and Gertrude Holmer.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main Street, Norwalk from 6-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held the following day, Monday, June 20, 2022, at St. Alphonsus Church, Peru beginning at 10 am with burial to follow in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, Norwalk is honored to assist the family with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Alphonsus Church or Stein Hospice through the funeral home.
