Wilson Figueroa Velazquez, 59, of Fairview Park, died Sunday, January 17, 2021, while on duty serving the community of New London, as a police officer. Born on July 28, 1961, in Puerto Rico, Wilson was the son of Luz Lydia Velazquez Gonzalez and the late Roberto Figueroa Diaz. Wilson grew up in Puerto Rico, moving to Illinois when he was 14.
Wilson was a public servant at heart and took great pride in helping others. He proudly served in the United States Army for 6 years. Following his time in the military, Wilson began his 20 year career with the Cleveland Fire Department. He later began volunteering his time with the New London Police Department and in 2006 was hired as a part time officer. When he was not helping others, Wilson enjoyed reading, traveling and riding his motorcycle through the country side. Those who knew him will remember his sense of humor and his gentle spirit.
Survivors include his mother and step father, Luz Gonzalez and Manuel Ramos; sisters Carmen Leticia Maldonado, of Puerto Rico, Mayra Jackson, and Ivette Camarano, both of Illinois, Gretchen, Nidia, Robert, Mirna, Leticia, Norma, Robinson, and Vette Figueroa, all of Puerto Rico; his Prima Hermana/no, Carmen, Margaret, John, Eddie, Gogi Alicea, and Tamika Cruz, as well as their sons and daughters. Best friends Ernie Pacheco & Julio Velázquez. Wilson was preceded in death by his Father Roberto Figueroa Diaz.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2021 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the New London Alliance Church, 4625 State Route 162, New London, Ohio 44851, where the Funeral Service will begin at 4:00 p.m with Pastor Toby Thomas officiating. Burial will take place in Puerto Rico. Visitors are required to bring and wear a face mask or covering while inside the church and are encouraged to follow all social distancing and mass gathering requirements.
